PE
'Obstacles don’t have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don’t turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it or work around it.'
(Michael Jordan)
PE at our school is something we are very proud of, across the year our fab PE lead - Mrs Noonan - sends out a newsletter celebrating some of our successes. There are so many, we can't capture them all! Well done to all our pupils who engage so brilliantly in training, competitions, team and solo events and for those who support us so very well.

INTENT
At St. Mary and St. Andrew’s Catholic Primary School, we provide an ambitious Physical Education (PE) curriculum that inspires and engages all pupils. We aim to empower our pupils to become independent and resilient learners and equip them with the knowledge and skills beyond the minimum statutory requirements. Pupils learn many life qualities from sport such as: confidence, self-esteem, teamwork, leadership, discipline and the ability to deal with success and failure in equal measure; these are skills that we develop as they help prepare pupils for any opportunities, responsibilities or challenges in life after school. Through our teaching of PE, we provide opportunities for pupils to develop values and transferrable life skills such as fairness and respect, as well as providing them with opportunities to take part in competitive sport.
Our goal is to make sure that all pupils can achieve the aims of the national curriculum through a broad, balanced and progressive PE curriculum. Our PE curriculum is focused upon the development of fundamental skills, understanding of the rules of games, healthy living and exercise (including mental health and physical health). The intent of our PE curriculum is to not only provide all pupils with high quality PE and sport provision but it is our vision for every pupil to succeed and achieve their potential as well as lead physically active lifestyles. It is developed in a way where pupils can be creative, critical and evaluative of their own performance and the performance of their peers.
IMPLEMENTATION
Our planning has ensured that pupils’ interests have been considered whilst adhering to the full implementation of the PE programmes of study in EYFS, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2.
We use the scheme ‘P.E Passport’ to support the delivery of the curriculum. We strive to inspire our pupils through fun and engaging PE lessons that are enjoyable, challenging and accessible to all. Teachers adapt plans to meet the needs of individuals in order for the pupils to secure existing knowledge and skills and acquire new knowledge and skills. We have a commitment from staff to develop pupils across different domains - physically, socially and emotionally. The curriculum is carefully planned with the intention to address social disadvantage and ensure that all pupils (including those with SEND) have an opportunity to engage with a challenging curriculum and achieve success through our sports premium grant. Any gaps in pupils’ knowledge and skills are quickly identified and addressed to ensure that pupils are supported to meet the ambitious intended end points of the curriculum in PE. It is important to note that staff CPD is prioritised in this subject to ensure high quality lessons for children. The PE passport, which aids CPD, is progressive in its delivery; teachers who deliver the subject to mixed age groups select one unit from the lower year group and one from the older year group for each half term. We aim to host one lesson inside and one lesson outdoors each week.
All pupils receive 2 hours of high-quality PE each week regardless of the weather or other external factors. The following PE subject specific characteristics, which we expect the pupils to demonstrate, underpin all work in PE:
- Develop physical confidence in a way which supports fitness and health.
- Compete in sport and other activities to build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect.
- Develop competence to excel in a broad range of activities.
- Be physically active for a sustained period of time.
- Engage in competitive sports and activities.
- Lead healthy and active lives.
- Communicate, collaborate and compete with one another.
- Work both individually and within a team.
- Understand how to improve in different physical activity and sport and learn how to recognise and evaluate their own success.
IMPACT
Our well-constructed curriculum in PE leads to successful learning. This is evidenced in the outcomes demonstrated in PE lessons and the extracurricular activities pupils participate in. Pupils enjoy representing the school and comment positively on the wide range of activities offered to them. Pupils are well prepared for the next steps and stages of their learning due to the progressive and well sequenced units of work. As a result, pupils make excellent progress as they know more and remember more as they move through school.
Feedback from pupil voice questionnaires have indicated that PE is a popular subject which most children enjoy. This is reflected in the increase in numbers across the school of children who are taking part in after school sporting clubs and representing school teams in inter-school competitions.
